Telling the stories of food, community and beauty.

The first day of spring in March came and went so much earlier than the spring we knew would finally come, the spring we’d greet with lifted spirit and hope grown from the greening world around us. For this turn of the season each of us has treasured talismans from the natural world—the world of rain and worms, sprouting seeds and tiny leaves, sunshine and blossoms, mushrooms and edible bulbs.

Every spring for the past ten years I have come to this page to talk about these things, and to welcome you to a printed experience of the edible world in this little part of the state that is bounded to the west by the sparkling waters of Lake Michigan and its bays. This time around I can’t help but feel an extra swell of love and gratitude for all of our contributors along the way. They have filled these editions with words and images telling stories of food, people, communities and beauty. They have made this a magazine that readers anticipate eagerly and that area businesses find worthy of support.

To a one, they have stepped forward with enthusiasm for their craft and their subjects. They are writers and photographers, home cooks, business folk, farmers and chefs. Although they’ve had credit along the way I am calling them out once more for an encore cheer. It’s been our honor to work with them and they are the ones who have brought the meaning of community to these pages.

Let the feasts of spring begin!

Roast Chicken Salad

In 1993, I was working as a journalist at KQED, the birthplace of many of my favorite old cooking shows. At the time Jacques Pepin and the late Julia Child were recording their “Cooking at Home”...

Pizza with Chard and Wild Mushrooms

I salvaged the last of my frozen, stewed garden tomatoes from last summer for this sauce and they were excellent, but canned would work as well. With the herbs, I almost always prefer fresh, but won...
